The Importance of Creating Landmarks in Your Life

Investing in real estate is a journey—a journey filled with twists and turns along a path of ups and downs. There are moments of elation that power you forward, and moments of deep frustration that make you want to quit.

In that way, investing in real estate mirrors real life, with its ups and downs and sudden and surprising changes of direction.

Over two decades ago, our understanding of the importance of staying on a proven path, even when one feels frustration, was the impetus for designing the REIN Awards program. We were witnessing too many people begin their financial journey, then, after a bump or two on the road, completely give up on their dream. Many lost perspective of just how far they had come and how much they had already achieved because their sole focus was the end goal.

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. —Thomas Edison

Well, we set out to change that dynamic. We wanted to give members perspective on their personal journey. We wanted to give them the necessary tools—and motivation we all need at times. And that is the foundation of the REIN Awards program. Within the community, we celebrate the small wins along the way while supporting members through the inevitable bumps and twists.

Whether it be a simple bronze pin acknowledging a member’s purchase of their first three properties or an annual Player of the Year Award, each is important. Each becomes a landmark on the journey, a landmark providing perspective on the forward momentum that is being created.

Once you understand why the awards program exists, you begin to see that it really is not about ego or bragging. It’s not meant as a “Look at me” moment (there are already enough of those in today’s world of social media). Rather, the program exists so that we, as a community, get to celebrate alongside you on your journey—and get motivated by your wins. When you win, your community wins right along with you. Thus, the opposite is also true: when you go through a tough patch, the community is right there to support you—because, frankly, we want to celebrate more of your wins in the future.

I am sure that support from the community is one of the central reasons we have hundreds of members who have been presented with awards acknowledging 10- and 20-year anniversaries. They have found a place where they can help others win while also getting the support they need to win themselves. There are not that many places in the world where this occurs anymore.

The journey of becoming a successful real estate investor is a long one. The trail is winding, sometimes dark, sometimes spectacular. Just remember to put landmarks down along the way to remind yourself of your achievements, both large and small. They will be backstops when you feel you may slide backwards.

You can begin doing this by contacting the REIN office (Cheryl@reincanada.com) to submit details about your property purchases. Then, by celebrating your purchases, you win and so does your community.

Being a “trail guide” for so many of you along this twisting and turning road continues to be an honour for us here at the Real Estate Investment Network. Yes, it’s true: the ultimate reward comes when that financial goal is achieved. However, why not also celebrate the steps along the way—in real estate, in business, in all areas of your life? Make the journey a part of the destination, just like we do at REIN. We call it living the REIN Life.
