Master of Disaster

For almost 30 years, Leann Hackman-Carty has led public, private and non-profit organizations through eras of change into new levels of growth and stability through her specialties in community economic development, business and economic recovery, and entrepreneurship.

Leann is the CEO of Economic Developers Alberta (EDA), which inspired her focus on disaster relief. In 2014, she completed an Economic Disaster Recovery Project following the Alberta floods, where she organized 11 technical assistance teams, and completed individual business and economic recovery reports.

Leann’s project is an incredible organization due to the huge numbers of people that are impacted by natural disasters each year. Often, those that are impacted do not know what to do afterwards, or what they indeed should have done beforehand, including creating a disaster plan and having an emergency preparedness kit. Leann covers all of this with her company.

Leann also works closely with the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and their Restore Your Economy division. She Canadianized their “Recovery and Resiliency Roadmap: A Toolkit for Economic Preparedness”, which helps communities prepare for and recover from economic disruptions.

As a result of her work in emergency relief and economic recovery, she has authored three books under the umbrella of Master Your Disaster. The three books are themed for individual, business & community emergency preparedness and recovery.

On the latest episode of The Everyday Millionaire, Leann discusses the compelling reasons behind her call to action in the wake of two natural disasters, and the impacts she has within municipalities to help them plan and prepare. She also discusses emergency preparedness from a rental housing provider standpoint, how her varied path of education turned out to be reflective of the work she does now, and she provides guidance on how you can become involved and engaged in individual risk mitigation as a home owner and real estate investor.
